Vision: A transformed society where the elderly and other vulnerable persons are recognized, healthy, economically productive, and empowered to manage and sustain their livelihood.
Purpose/objectives:

1. To mobilize the community to acknowledge the extent of prevalence of the elderly and other vulnerable persons in order to draw support for their situation.
2. To build the capacity of caregivers and other stakeholders including the elderly themselves.
3. To contribute to the prevention and control of further spread of HIV/AIDS.
4. To help households and caregivers to initiate and manage income generating activity.
5. To provide spiritual support.

Background:

Heart of Mercies was founded in October 2007 by 12 people from six sub-counties of West Budama County concerned that older persons were not participating.

With encouragement of a local politician, the organisation grew from a village to a community based organisation, registering as an NGO in 2008. A successful mobilization and sensitisation program was then carried out in the six sub-counties, with a total of 1248 participants, followed by election of elderly functional support committees in each sub-county. Currently 823 persons aged over 60 are registered with Heart of Mercies.

A needs assessment was carried out in August 2008 with 48 older persons from the six sub-counties and the following issues were identified and prioritised:

1. Lack of social economic security
2. Food insecurity and nutrition
3. Lack of care and support
4. Poor health
5. Lack of psychosocial support
6. Lack of protection and legal support
7. Lack of capacity and information on many issues that affect older persons, such as HIV/AIDS

NGO registration: Yes
Main activities:

1. Provision of inputs and farm implements to caregivers of the elderly and other vulnerable persons.
2. Training community volunteers on psychosocial and emotional support, lobbying and advocacy, and spiritual support.
3. Training caregivers on environmental protection and project sustainability.
4. Establishment of a vocational skills training centre.
5. Socal support to HIV/AIDS elderly clients.
6. Provision of clean water.
7. Creation of awareness on water hygiene and sanitation to the caregivers to the community health workers.

Priorities for the future: Future goals, depending on funding, include: distributing materials to older persons such as blankets, mattresses, basins and mosquito nets; distributing scholastic materials to vulnerable children; income generating projects, such as goats, chickens and handicrafts; establishing a special clinic for older persons; and teaching older persons how to write a memory book so that grandchildren are aware of their family history. Will making skills are also important
