| Vision: | A transformed society where the elderly and other vulnerable persons are recognized, healthy, economically productive, and empowered to manage and sustain their livelihood. |
| Purpose/objectives: |
1. To mobilize the community to acknowledge the extent of prevalence of the elderly and other vulnerable persons in order to draw support for their situation. |
| Background: |
Heart of Mercies was founded in October 2007 by 12 people from six sub-counties of West Budama County concerned that older persons were not participating. With encouragement of a local politician, the organisation grew from a village to a community based organisation, registering as an NGO in 2008. A successful mobilization and sensitisation program was then carried out in the six sub-counties, with a total of 1248 participants, followed by election of elderly functional support committees in each sub-county. Currently 823 persons aged over 60 are registered with Heart of Mercies. A needs assessment was carried out in August 2008 with 48 older persons from the six sub-counties and the following issues were identified and prioritised:
1. Lack of social economic security |
| NGO registration: | Yes |
| Main activities: |
1. Provision of inputs and farm implements to caregivers of the elderly and other vulnerable persons. |
| Priorities for the future: | Future goals, depending on funding, include: distributing materials to older persons such as blankets, mattresses, basins and mosquito nets; distributing scholastic materials to vulnerable children; income generating projects, such as goats, chickens and handicrafts; establishing a special clinic for older persons; and teaching older persons how to write a memory book so that grandchildren are aware of their family history. Will making skills are also important |
